TIP animated videos answer COVID vaccine questions, debunk misinformation

A series of short videos — created through a unique collaboration between The Immunization Partnership and Amerigroup Texas — seeks to slow the spread of COVID-19 by increasing awareness about the vaccines that fight it.

Coastal Health & Wellness clinics in Galveston are among the first in Texas to roll out these animated bilingual videos we produced with funding from Amerigroup. The videos encourage vaccination, answer questions about the vaccine, and debunk falsehoods circulating over social media and elsewhere. Such misunderstandings and misinformation contribute to vaccine hesitancy, drive down vaccination rates, and worsen the strain on health workers and resources.

Nominate an Immunization Community Champion

This year TIP inaugurates our Community Immunization Champion Award. The award recognizes a Texas individual who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to protecting the public health through immunization education and advocacy during the past year and who exemplifies the spirit of an immunization champion in the nominee’s professional or personal community.

We will present the award during our annual Community Immunity Luncheon on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2021.

Nominate your community immunization champion here.

Back to school with the basics

TIP has a free, one-hour, online course called Your Healthy Classroom. We designed this course for teachers, school nurses, and everyone else in your school. It reviews the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases in the classroom, current Texas policies, and ways teachers can keep their classrooms healthy. It also provides helpful educational resources. We believe this course will impact teachers and school nurses by providing immunization awareness at the classroom level.

You can find out more about the course on our Immunization University (IZU) webpage or by clicking on this link.

TIP talks to Texas

Rekah Lakshmanan, our director of advocacy and public policy and contributing expert with Rice University Baker Institute for Public Policy Science and Technology Policy Program co-authored a blog about two new laws as of Sept. 1, 2021.

SB 1353 and SB 239 will help increase access to immunization information and vaccine availability during emergencies and disasters. This information can support vulnerable populations in making well-informed decisions and taking appropriate actions to protect their own health and safety and those of others.

We heard from you, and THANKS

We want to send out a big THANK YOU for everyone who took part in our 10 virtual focus groups since June. Our participants shared their vaccine beliefs and experiences, and not just about the COVID-19 vaccines. Sorry, no insights to share right now because the information was confidential. Your participation will help guide our programing as we improved and expand our vaccine education and advocacy for Texans of all ages. Remember, vaccines work and vaccines save lives by preventing the preventable.

TIP Meme of the Month

The August TIP Meme of the Month reminds us that masks and vaccines serve purposes other than to protect us against diseases.

Schools are open again, mostly

Texas public school kids have started another school year. For some, it’s the first time in a classroom in more than a year. For others, it’s back to online classes for right now. Regardless of where they take classes, kids need to be current with their vaccinations. Here’s a list of the Texas minimum requirements for K-12. Check with your healthcare provider and the CDC guidelines to ensure your family members are up-to-date.

Texas still a long way from community immunity

The Texas Department of State Health Services says we have about 55% of the state fully vaccinated as of Aug. 20, 2021.

We need about 80% for community immunity in any given location. Your vaccine is waiting for you, so exercise your right to bare arms and take a shot for Texas.
