Dr. Peter Hotez receives prestigious award

Please join us in congratulating The Immunization Partnership Scientific Advisory Council member Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, recipient of the David E. Rogers Award for 2021. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Association of American Medical Colleges sponsor this prestigious award that goes to a medical school faculty member who has made major contributions to improving health and health care of Americans.

Dr. Hotez is Texas Children’s Hospital Chair in Tropical Pediatrics, co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

He will receive the award at the Association of American Medical Colleges Awards Recognition Event on Oct. 27. The award is in memory of David E. Rogers, the first President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Hotez and Lakshmanan call for uncoupling vaccinations from politics

Dr. Hotez and Rekha Lakshmanan, our Director of Advocacy and Public Policy, are among several authors of an article published this month in The Lancet, which called for uncoupling vaccination from politics: “Historically, anti-vaccine rhetoric has had minimal policy impact because bipartisan political leadership strongly endorsed the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. However, in recent years, anti-vaccine activism has received support from some state-level Republican officials during legislative debates over bills to improve vaccine uptake.”

TIP calls on Texas lawmakers to take politics out of public health

TIP’s call to action comes as the Texas Legislature begins its Third Special Session, with instructions from Gov. Greg Abbott to pass legislation regarding whether any state or local governmental entities in Texas can mandate that an individual receive a COVID-19 vaccine, and if so, what exemptions would apply to such a mandate.

We oppose several bills introduced in the current special session because they:

  • Fail to protect Texans and further erode the vital role of our state’s public health and medical experts in combating this pandemic;
  • Would result in lower overall vaccination rates and make Texas a less safe place to live; and
  • Would cause economic and academic turmoil as Texans are forced to undergo surge after surge of COVID-19.

Political considerations, not public health interests, drive these harmful bills. We expect our elected officials to represent the best interests of their constituents, and not just the vocal few who push agendas harmful to Texans. We encourage you to contact your state representative and senator to tell them to oppose these dangerous bills. The power of the people comes from the voice of the people. It is time Texas lawmakers hear our voices.

Dr. Hotez and Prof. Leana Wen talks about the future of the pandemic

Dr. Hotez and Prof. Leana Wen of George Washington University discussed the coronavirus pandemic during The Texas Tribune Festival. Prof. Wen also is an emergency physician and she served as health commissioner of Baltimore. They talked about how we got to where we are with the COVID-19 pandemic and where they believe things are headed. They spoke with The Texas Tribune health and human services reporter Karen Brooks Harper. Click here to watch the program.

Return to school at TIP’s Immunization University

We’re offering professional continuing education credit through Immunization University (IZU). This new online platform provides nursing educational courses/modules, which include information about immunizations and vaccine-preventable diseases.

The professional continuing education credit for nursing approved credits is through a partnership with Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth. We also offer non-credit courses. All courses are open to everyone, and they are free.

If you have any question about IZU, the courses, or options to make the course interactive for your college or university, please contact Katy Gore at kgore@immunizeUSA.org.

Texas still a long way from community immunity

The Texas Department of State Health Services reports that as of Sept. 24, Texas has 14.7 million residents fully vaccinated, or about 50.4% of our population. But . . . that is ALL Texans, which means we are a long way from that 80-90% experts say we need to achieve herd, or community, immunity against COVID-19. Texans under 12 cannot get vaccinated, so among those who can, those 12 and older, the fully vaccinated number is 61.16%.

Presidio County still leads the way with 97.35% of its population 12 and older fully vaccinated.

TIP animated videos answer COVID vaccine questions, debunk misinformation

A series of short videos — created through a unique collaboration between The Immunization Partnership and Amerigroup Texas — seeks to slow the spread of COVID-19 by increasing awareness about the vaccines that fight it.

The videos encourage vaccination, answer questions about the vaccine, and debunk falsehoods circulating over social media and elsewhere. Such misunderstandings and misinformation contribute to vaccine hesitancy, drive down vaccination rates, and worsen the strain on health workers and resources.
